Joseph Dickerson stands behind the bar in his restaurant, Best Bites, in Martinez. The restaurant offers a variety of Mediterranean food for lunch and dinner.

Best Bites Mediterranean Pizzeria, Bar & Grill opened at 4017 Columbia Road.

Best Bites has seven employees and is open for lunch and dinner, said Hasibe Dickerson, the manager and mother of the owner, Joseph Dickerson.

The mother and son have years of experience in the restaurant industry, but this is Joseph Dickerson’s first time owning a restaurant.

The 3,100-square-foot space is a former sushi restaurant, and the Dickersons completed extensive renovations to the building, Hasibe Dickerson said.

Hasibe Dickerson was born in Bulgaria and grew up in Turkey and Greece loving Mediterranean food. The restaurant has attracted local residents who were regular customers at Athens Pizza on Bobby Jones Expressway before it closed, she said.

“They are happy that gyros and Mediterranean food is back,” Hasibe Dickerson said.

If the average person could

If the average person could see what goes on in SOME kitchens, they would never eat out again. I have a buddy in a business that requires him to be in kitchens from time to time and he is very careful about where he eats out; not as much these days though as it used to be. Better inspections I suppose.

I've eaten there a couple of

I've eaten there a couple of times and it's wonderful. I was reluctant to try the hummus, but it's really good. (The word just sounds gross!) The lamb stew is wonderful, as are the gyros. Try it--you'll like it!

I don't understand why the negative comments about Athens Pizza were put on here. They have nothing to do with this restaurant.

They also have a full bar--not that I've tried it, of course!
