A 152,000-square-foot Walmart Supercenter on Wrightsboro Road near North Leg Road could be open by March 2014, according to Jeffrey Hodgkinson, an engineer for Wolverton and Associates, the consulting firm for the project.

The construction timeline and site plans were explained to a small group of residents at a meeting Thursday night at New Life Christian Center on Wrightsboro Road, which will be razed to build the store in Forest Hills shopping center.

The site plan goes before the Augusta-Richmond County Planning Commission on Monday for final approval. Full construction plans could be submitted in October, and 10 months of construction could begin in March 2013.

Residents from Forest Estates neighborhood raised concerns about traffic and light pollution but said they welcomed Walmart so long as dialog continued.

Ruby Patterson’s Forest Estates house backs up to the proposed store. She was pleased to hear about plans for a tree-and-landscape buffer intended to reduce noise and light pollution.

“My concern is the traffic on Wrightsboro Road and how that will flow since there’s so much traffic already,” Patterson said.

Hodgkinson said the plan calls for a new traffic signal on Wrightsboro Road just west of North Leg Road, which will create a gap in traffic and help cars exiting side streets.

The community meeting was the second held since the company announced plans to build the store in mid-January. Mayor Pro Tem Joe Bowles, Augusta Commission member Bill Lockett and Planning and Development Director George Patty attended the meeting and helped address concerns.

Just curious, but where is

Just curious, but where is the church moving to? That's a fairly large and established church, so I wouldn't think they are just disbanding.

Bdouglas, I bet that church is in high heaven with what they got. They'll have a much better church wherever they build.

Unpublished

BDouglas, NLCC is moving to land they purchased years ago on Lewiston Road in Grovetown. The church has grown by leaps and bounds since it first opened. I believe the church is pushing 1500 members.

Very true. I was just wondering what their plans were. The place was pretty nice inside with what they'd done with it. Sang at a wedding there once.

Our church owns 32 acres of land on Lewiston Road in Columbia County where we'll build. I'm not too excited as a resident of Forest Estates about the traffic or the longer commute to church.
