The drive to visit the nearest Steak ’n Shake will soon become a lot shorter.

The popular burger joint, specializing in steak burgers and hand-dipped milkshakes, is expected to open in July at Jimmie Dyess Parkway and Belair Frontage Road in Columbia County, said franchise owner Preston Moss.

“My family had always loved (Steak ’n Shake),” said Moss, who works for Blanchard and Calhoun Insurance. “Every time we traveled, we would make it part of the plan. We knew where it was.”

Moss recently purchased the 2-acre vacant site for $950,000 from Ruby Tuesday, whose plans to build a restaurant there never materialized.

Some site work on the property was already done, he said.

The Grovetown site, next to the Interstate 20 eastbound on-ramp, gives the restaurant great visibility from both I-20 and Jimmie Dyess Parkway, Moss said.

About 38,000 vehicles drive on Jimmie Dyess Parkway daily, Moss said.

The3,500-square-foot restaurant will remain open 24 hours, seven days a week and serve breakfast. It will also have a drive-through window and employ about 100 people, Moss said.

Moss hopes work on the site will start in February.

Moss decided he wanted to open a Steak ’n Shake in the area about eight years ago, but was delayed as the restaurant chain underwent new ownership.

There are nearly 500 Steak ’n Shake restaurants in 22 states. The closest to Augusta area are in Atlanta, Macon, Ga., and Greenville, S.C.

Some people continue to say

Some people continue to say they don't care if the chronicle prints crime outside of Richmond County... They tell us all the time, the paper is called the Augusta Chronicle.. I don't really care either, but shouldn't Richmond County get the majority of positive articles too..

The paper continues to print several retail openings in CC, but not the one's in Richmond.. If they do make the paper it's stuck under the business section were nobody can see it..

The Chronicle made a article discussing Cudos, Five Guys, Steak & Shake, etc.. No article under latest updates dedicated towards Sprint Food & Metro Market, Five O'Clock Bistro, Tutti Frutti, Ulta, Bare Esscentuals, Pandora, Buffalo Wild Wings, Beall's, etc

It's not a coincidence because they finally decided to print the tribunals outside of RC recently..

Great news for the Augusta area....

Lol.. Everyday the residents of RC have to listen to people overexaggerate about the crime, etc.. People get on here and complain about something everyday...

Mention anything about Columbia County, and some people can't take it....

Only in Augusta do people get

Only in Augusta do people get excited about a chain restaurant where you can get a 2000 calorie burger and a 1200 calorie milk shake.
I think Augusta may be the fattest city in America. At least its number one in something

Really? I wish I had been

Really? I wish I had been there. I would love to be able to meet countyman. I do admire his positive outlook. Even though he does sometimes go over the top with his cheer-leading, he seems to be a good ambassador for Augusta. Anyhoo, I don't really care which county Steak n Shake is locating in, just glad they are coming. It used to always be a treat when in Atlanta.. now they will be just a few miles away. Oh, and I have always wanted to meet Riverman too. Let us know when you all will all be gathered together again.

Another article giving

Another article giving Countyman an opportunity to copy and paste his list of business coming to RC. I'm getting tired of the rambling about this Sprint Food & Metro Market downtown...

I think Steak & Shakecoming

I think Steak & Shakecoming to CC especially a Grovetown address is good. I just can't understand why the same isn't being done for another county.

B. Douglass.. All of the businesses are already open in RC, and Sprint Foods & Metro Market is under construction.. You don't think people are tired of your same comments toward Richmond County..

CC or RC, it shouldn't

CC or RC, it shouldn't matter. Its good for the entire area. However, I do like the previous mention of the 5 o'clock Bistro. People should do themselves a favor and give it a try. Its a hidden jewel of the CSRA and very much a local establishment. Good food! I'm extremely happy to be getting a Steak and Shake. Its about time.

So why not Richmond County?

So why not Richmond County? The article answered the question...38,000 cars pass by that location! Come on folks, drive (if you dare) on just about any major road in CC around rush hour.
Now drive in RC the same day of the week, same time of day, main roads and tell me there isn't a difference. It's a business, not a charity.

Countryman maybe, the

Countryman maybe, the individual reporting lives in CC. Wouldn't it benefit them to put it in the paper for free advertising? I would appreciate it if I had a new spot coming to town too. Personally I prepare my own tasty dishes. Many places are not the cleaness places I've been in. Just saying.

B.Douglass... When I

B.Douglass... When I suggested Five Guys put their next restaurant in South Augusta.. You responded multiple times why South Augusta shouldn't get one..

Old Fella... The majority of Jimmie Dyess Pkwy runs through Richmond County... That little bit of car traffic on Jimmie Dyess is nothing compared to Washington rd, Wrightsboro rd, Windsor Spring, Wheeler rd, Walton Way, etc.. Plus the 25 acre shopping center(future) and 10k sq. ft. Shoppes at Dyess Park(starting very soon) is coming to the Jimmie Dyess portion of Richmond County(next to Zaxbys)...

Sah.... Are you really serious?? I'm sure the recent opening of Costco(first outside of metro Atlanta) was a figment of imagination.. There's businesses even coming to the road you told me to drive down.. The multi million Hampton Inn on Gordon Hwy under construction next to Raceway.. The Mccoys Creek subdivision consist of 62 acres residential and 1 acre commerical.. It's right down the street from the 200 acre Haynes Station.. New businesses, schools, etc definitely will be making their way to Gordon hwy between Jimmie Dyess and Grovetown...

I'm only responding twice

I'm only responding twice because I couldn't actually believe what I read...

Old Fella.. I didn't even mention 15th street were it's almost 100k cars per daily.. Do you actually ride through RC during rush hour?

http://www2.wjbf.com/news/2010/sep/07/phase-1-begins-paine-college-growt...

Sah.. Plenty of people who live in RC work for the Augsuta Chronicle.. They can easily print articles disucssing the new businesses in Richmond County.. I think you need to know Richmond County is leading the CSRA in new commercial permits...

Evidently oldfella hasn't

Evidently oldfella hasn't been on Hwy 56 or the Peach Orchard Rd areas during rush hour.....with traffic from Volgel and IP alone, I would bet there is as much traffic between 3pm and 6pm....I know, I've had to drive in it.

A burger joint is opening.
Unpublished

A burger joint is opening. That's it, right? What am I missing?

Somebody else said it before me but I'll say it, too. Only in Augusta would an event like this warrant a) an entire newspaper article and b) several dozen comments.

America and Augusta in particular, needs to start manufacturing and producing things which the world actually needs, apart from cholesterol. This country's economy has been reduced to service industries where we flip burgers and make coffee for each other (hence the general rejoicing by the usual suspects over the opening of a fast food outlet), while real jobs have been offshored to India and China. That's not going to cut it folks.

This is just another example of the phony economy which produces nothing.

Columbia County is likely to

Columbia County is likely to be a far more attractive location than 15th Street or Peach Orchard to any business that plans to be open 24 hours. Being near I-20 helps as well. I've always thought Five Guys was very overrated. I ate at a Steak n Shake twice this year for the first time and enjoyed it. I look forward to them setting up here.

Unpublished

Having grown up in the mid-west, I've loved Steak & Shake since the days when they had old-fashioned curb service! I remember spending most of my youth backed into a spot at S&S and flashing your lights for service. I'm glad one is coming to the area, but I think that near the Costco would have been a better location. They could draw from NA as well as Augusta. Keep up the good work Augusta (and surrounding area) on bringing ANY new business to the area!

It would depend on the type

It would depend on the type of business, and what apart of Columbia County.. I doubt any 24hr business would consider Appling or Harlem a better choice than 15th street or Peach Orchard.. Other than the Walmart area and Jimmie Dyess(both of which are near I-20), the locations in Grovetown don't really stand out against Peach Orchard..

Denny's is opening a 24hr restaurant on Peach Orchard rd in the future..
