Jobless claims drop for Augusta

First-time claims for unemployment insurance benefits in September decreased in the Augusta metro area.

There were 1,757 claims last month, the Georgia Department of Labor reported Thursday, down from 1,966 in August. The number is down slightly compared to September 2010.

In Georgia, claims also declined last month, to 51,267 from 56,476 in August.

Most of the first-time claims were filed in trade, manufacturing, construction and administrative and support services, the state labor department reported.

There was an over-the-year decrease of 5,879 initial claims, or 10.3 percent, from September of last year.

SEPTEMBER INITIAL CLAIMS FOR UNEMPLOYMENT
  • Richmond County: 981, down from 1,129 in August
  • Columbia County: 360, down from 364 in August
  • Burke County: 167, up from 140 in August
  • McDuffie County: 183, down from 275 in August
