Take time to build network; in time you will see its value

  • Follow Business

What do you think of when you hear the word "networking?" Do you feel you are a skillful networker or inept at introducing yourself and interacting with strangers at social or professional events? Do you belong to any professional or social organizations? If so, are you an active member or a member by name only? How much time do you devote to networking? Is it something that you do on a daily, weekly, monthly or annual basis? When was the last time you spoke to and/or had a face-to-face interaction with anyone in your network? Your response to these questions is a reflection on how you view networking and its importance to your personal and professional development.

Networking has consistently proved to be an invaluable tool for many individuals who unexpectedly lost their jobs, decided to make a major career change, or wanted to advance in their respective professions. Networking is about building and maintaining relationships with others who can support and assist you and vice versa. These are win-win relationships.

Some people learn early in their careers the importance of networking. And then others resist exploring this resource and as a result continue to struggle in their careers. I find that those who resist are operating from half-truths. If you have yet to embrace the concept of networking or feel uncomfortable with taking steps to develop and cultivate strong, mutual relationships with others, the purpose of this month's article is to introduce you to three key aspects related to successful networking.

Key aspects of successful networking:

- The first aspect of networking is "it is not what you know but who you know." How many times have you thought this after not being offered a position that they interviewed for? I feel that this quote expresses the true essence and importance of networking. Believe it or not, it is a fact the more people you know, and vice versa, the better your marketability in the workplace. Those individuals who excel in their careers recognize the benefits of attending and connecting with others on a regular basis.

- The second aspect relates to establishing and building your network through memberships and active involvement in professional organizations related to your field. I know you are familiar with "birds of a feather flock together." Those who are successful at networking are those individuals who understand and recognize the value of connecting with others in their respective professions. This is critical for those interested in maintaining their credibility and reputation among their colleagues and peers.

- The third aspect of networking focuses on embracing and appreciating diversity and differences. I have no doubt that you are familiar with the saying "opposites attract." Be willing to research and expand your networking activities that force you to connect with diverse groups of people such as community-based or social organizations. This particular aspect is invaluable if you are considering a major job or career change.
