A 27-year-old North Carolina man faces charges of DUI and leaving the scene of an accident after he hit a mo-ped Tuesday evening, causing serious injuries to the mo-ped’s driver, police said.

Aiken Public Safety officers found Tammy Lynn Mitchell, 47, with serious injuries on Whiskey Road, just south of Boardman Road, around 10:30 p.m., according to a news release.

Mitchell was taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital while officers searched the area for the vehicle, which had been seen driving away rapidly.

Anthony Ray Martin, of Whiteville, N.C., was booked into the Aiken County Detention Center after officers found his 1999 Buick sedan at the Clarion Inn on Colony Parkway. Martin has been charged with felony DUI and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in great bodily injury.

Officers said they believe Martin was southbound on Whiskey Road when he crossed the center line and hit the mo-ped.
