At Belvedere Elementary, fifth-graders gathered in classrooms after their awards day program and shared stories, played games and talked about their summer plans.

Summer will be filled with travel for Kylie Grooms and Hannah Jones.

“I’m going to Louisiana to see my family,” said Hannah, 10.

“I’m going to New Mexico and Colorado,” said Kylie, 11.

The best thing about the last day of school is the fun, said Alexander Miller, 11, who had perfect attendance for the school year.

“You get to be with friends and have a lot of fun,” he said.

Over the summer, he plans to spend a lot of time swimming, going to the park and hanging out with friends.

Though the last day of school is exciting for many pupils, it’s a day filled with mixed emotions for teachers.

“It’s bittersweet,” said Matt Franklin, a fifth-grade social studies teacher at Belvedere. “You’re sad to see them go because you spent the last year getting to know them and they’ve touched your heart. On the other hand, you’re excited for them because it’s your job to prepare them to go on to the next grade.”
