A 20-year-old Wagener man died Thursday night and three people were sent to the hospital after a wreck in Aiken County.

It was the third fatal accident in Aiken County this week and the ninth this year.

Lance Cpl. Judd Jones, of the South Carolina Highway Patrol, said the driver of a 1994 Honda Civic died after the vehicle was hit on the left side by a 1995 Ford F-150 pickup on New Holland Road near Gunter Pond Road around 11:40 p.m. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton identified the driver as Chase Ray. Carlton added that the pickup didn’t stop at a stop sign before crashing into the car, and that the pickup’s driver, Robert Pou, 31, of Wagener, said his accelerator malfunctioned.

A passenger, identified as Amber Williams, 19, of Wagener, was airlifted to Palmetto Health Richland hospital in Columbia with serious injuries.

Both were wearing seat belts.

Pou was taken to a hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening. His passenger, Barbara Vinson, 27, of Wagener, was ejected from the vehicle and taken to a hospital with serious injuries.

Both people in the Ford were not wearing seat belts, Jones said.
