Aiken authorities have closed the Laurens Street bridge at Colleton Avenue after part of its foundation washed out Sunday night.

A detour has been established along Park Avenue and Chesterfield Street, and nearby sections of South Boundary Avenue and Laurens Street are closed except to local traffic, Aiken Public Safety Cpl. Jeremy Hembree said.

The 1975 bridge, which crosses a Southern Railroad line and averages more than 12,000 vehicles daily, was one of 45 Aiken County bridges considered “structurally deficient” in a 2009 federal survey.

The bridge will be closed for an indefinite period of time, Hembree said.
