The S.C. Department of Agriculture event, held at the State Farmers Market in West Columbia, drew competitors from South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Florida and North Carolina.
“Nothing’s fresher. Nothing’s finer. And, really, nothing’s ‘swiner’ than enjoying barbecue at the South Carolina Commissioner’s Cup,” said S.C. Agriculture Commissioner Hugh Weathers in a statement.
Ultimate Tailgater also won second place in the butts category, in which Palmetto Smokehouse in Okatie, S.C., placed first.
The Website for Ultimate Tailgater lists no address or phone number but says, “We bring our pit, tables, awnings, wood and other mobile kitchen supplies to your site, anywhere from 5-12 hours prior to the dinner bell being sounded!”
In the ribs category, Pot Belly Cookers of Summerville, S.C., won first place; Nards Barkyard BBQ of Piedmont, S.C., placed second; and Some-R-Swine of Summerville came in third.
The competition was sponsored by Piggly Wiggly, Smithfield, Pepsi of the Carolinas, U.S. Foods, Angel Insurance & Financial Services, Columbia Meats, and The Trophy and Gift Shop.
