A 71-year-old Aiken man died Tuesday evening after he was involved in a single-vehicle crash in the afternoon, authorities said.

Douglas Bevard was driving a 2006 Ford F-150 in the 200 block of Lakeside Drive in Aiken about 3:15 p.m. when the pickup ran off the road and hit a tree, Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton said.

Bevard, who was not wearing a seat belt, may have been speeding when the crash occurred, and alcohol is considered a factor, Carlton said.

Bevard was taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital, where he was pronounced dead from severe head trauma at 7:30 p.m. The crash is being investigated by Aiken Public Safety, the South Carolina Highway Patrol’s Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team and the coroner’s office.
