Santorum and other Republican candidates to stop in Aiken Tuesday

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum will speak at a sold-out lunch meeting of the Aiken Republican Club on Tuesday, hours before several other Republican presidential candidates will appear at a forum Tuesday evening at the University of South Carolina Aiken.

The “Last Word Before the First in the South” presidential primary rally is hosted by the CSRA Conservative Coalition, and tickets are $10 for adults, $5 with student identification and free for children under 10 years. To purchase tickets, go to www.ccgagop.org or to www.aikengop.com.

Brian Slowinski, the spokesman for the CSRA Conservative Coalition and the chairman of the Columbia County Republican Party, said he has received confirmation from Texas Congressman Ron Paul and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich’s campaigns that they will appear. Slowinski said he also has “90 percent confirmation” from Texas Gov. Rick Perry and Santorum’s campaigns.

Dennis Saylor, the chairman of the Aiken County Republican Party, said he was certain, however, that Perry would not be there.

“He won’t be on the stage,” Saylor said.

Saylor confirmed that Gingrich would be at the forum and was optimistic that Paul would show, but was less so of Santorum’s commitment to the event.

“I’m hopeful, but he will already be appearing at one event in Aiken the same day, so I’m not sure he’ll come.

Although former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney had yet to respond, Saylor wasn’t expecting a “yes” from his campaign either.

The forum will provide each candidate with 15 minutes to answer questions and five minutes for a closing statement.
