A Lancaster, S.C., man died Wednesday afternoon after being shot last month in Aiken County, the coroner said.
Nakia Slade, 37, was shot Dec. 23 near South Carolina Highway 19 North in Balltown. He was taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital that day, and he died there Wednesday afternoon, Coroner Tim Carlton said in an e-mail.
Carlton added that family members did not know why Slade was in Aiken County, and authorities have not been able to determine a motive.
An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday in Newberry, S.C. The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting, which is the county’s first homicide of 2012.
