A Lancaster, S.C., man died Wednesday afternoon after being shot last month in Aiken County, the coroner said.

Nakia Slade, 37, was shot Dec. 23 near South Carolina Highway 19 North in Balltown. He was taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital that day, and he died there Wednesday afternoon, Coroner Tim Carlton said in an e-mail.

Carlton added that family members did not know why Slade was in Aiken County, and authorities have not been able to determine a motive.

An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday in Newberry, S.C. The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting, which is the county’s first homicide of 2012.

How does a homicide count on

How does a homicide count on the 2012 books when the crime occurred in 2011? Just curious since the AC isn't the only one reporting it this way. If someone attempts murder and the victim winds up in a coma for 3 years before passing, would they then say the person was murdered at the later date?
