Former Sen. Rick Santorum to speak in Aiken

Former Sen. Rick Santorum will be the featured speaker for the Aiken Republican Club’s Tuesday meeting at Newberry Hall.

Santorum served in the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania’s 18th District from 1991 to 1995 and in the U.S. Senate from 1995 to 2007. He has also been a contributor to Fox News Channel. Santorum received 24.5 percent of the votes in the Iowa caucuses, a near tie with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

The former senator joins Rick Perry among GOP presidential candidates coming to Aiken County. The Texas governor is scheduled to visit Aiken and North Augusta today, starting with a walk in Aiken at 3:30 p.m. from The Gun Rack, at 213 Richland Ave. W., to Lionel Smith Ltd., 132 Laurens St. SW. At 4:30 p.m., Perry Will stop at the Aiken Municipal Building Conference Center, 215 The Alley, and at 6:15 p.m., he will visit Al’s Family Restaurant at 611 Atomic Road in North Augusta.

Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., was previously slated to speak at the Tuesday meeting, but canceled her presidential campaign after disappointing results in Iowa. Former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich also canceled a scheduled visit to Aiken on Saturday because of a conflict with a candidate forum the same day in Charleston.

Tickets for the Tuesday luncheon are $15 for members of the Aiken Republican Club and $20 for nonmembers. Call (803) 648-9542 to register by noon Saturday.
