Aiken Mayor Fred Cavanaugh presented character awards to the members of Aiken Public Safety’s C shift during the City Council meeting Monday night.

The C shift is the shift that worked by slain Master Public Safety Officer Scotty Richardson, who was shot and killed in the line of duty Dec. 20.

Officer Travis Griffin, who was also shot in the chest but saved by his bulletproof vest, was given the courage award. Sgt. Tracy Seymour and Lt. David Turno were given the compassion awards.

Sgt. Craig S. Burgess and the rest of C shift were given responsibility awards.

“It was a very touching time in the council meeting,” said City Manager Richard Pearce. “They have shown incredible professionalism during this tragic loss.”
