South Carolina education officials will hold a series of public meetings to explain the state’s intent to apply for a waiver from the controversial No Child Left Behind education law.

State Superintendent of Education Mick Zais last week announced a period of public comment. The state’s waiver request is available online at http://ed.sc.gov/agency/lpa/ESEAFlexibility.cfm. There is an online comment form allowing people to share their thoughts and ideas until Jan. 23. The State will submit its request for flexibility by February 21, 2012.

The meetings begin Jan. 3. The closest meetings to the South Carolina portion of the Augusta area are Jan. 4 at Wade Hampton High School, 115 Airport Road in Varnville, and Jan. 10 at Millbrook Elementary, 255 E. Pine Log Road in Aiken. The department also plans a virtual meeting, which can be seen on its Web site, on Jan. 11. All meetings are scheduled for 6 to 8:30 p.m.
