Jeanne Campbell Reesman, a biographer of Jack London who has written, co-authored or edited several works about him, will offer the program “You Don’t Know Jack” at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28 at the University of South Carolina Aiken’s Etherredge Center.
Reesman, a professor at the University of Texas, will offer the presentation as part of Aiken’s Wild Read initiative in honor of the classic American writer and his best-known work, The Call of the Wild. The event is free, but those wanting to attend are asked to obtain tickets beforehand through the Etherredge Center box office.
At the event, Reesman will offer an interactive presentation on the works and life of London.
“After the presentation, there will be a reception in the lobby area for an opportunity of student discussion with Dr. Reesman and, also, she will be selling some of her books about Jack London,” said Darlene Rittel, an official involved with Aiken’s overall Wild Read initiative.
The citywide reading project includes several events taking place throughout the community during the month of October.
“Dr. Reesman’s lecture factors into Aiken’s Wild Read since our central novel, The Call of the Wild, was written by Jack London,” Rittel said. “Although many people recognize and associate the author’s name with this book and others, such as White Fang, and The Sea-Wolf, they may not be aware of the broader scope of London’s works, other achievements, and his amazing adventures during his lifetime. Dr. Reesman’s presentation will provide attendees with this additional information and it may stimulate some to do further reading, which is one objective of Aiken’s Wild Read.”
Reesman also will make a guest appearance at the Academy for Life-Long Learning class at 11 a.m. Oct. 28, with Drew Geyer as the instructor. Geyer will discuss The Call of the Wild as one of his books in the American Realism in Literature Series. The class will meet in Room 106 of USC Aiken’s Penland Building. Also, on the afternoon of Oct. 28, Reesman will visit an Advanced Placement literature class at Midland Valley High School.
