Richmond County sheriff's Sgt. Dan Carrier said a motive wasn't known in the killing of Steve Mikel, who was shot at least twice.
Suspect Judy Washington, 52, of the 1700 block of Essie McIntyre Boulevard, was an acquaintance of Mikel from the neighborhood but they were not romantically involved, Carrier said.
Mikel, 45, was shot shortly before 4 a.m. Sunday, authorities say. He died less than an hour later at Medical College of Georgia Hospital.
Witnesses helped deputies identify Washington, who was arrested on 15th Street, Carrier said.
Several people were at the scene at the time of the shooting, he said.
Washington was charged with murder, possession of a firearm during commission of a crime and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. She is being held in the Richmond County jail.
Carrier could not release further details of the investigation, but he confirmed the incident was not drug-related.
A n autopsy is scheduled for today at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation 's Augusta lab.
