AIKEN -- Discipline tribunals were approved by the Aiken County School Board Tuesday in a 7-1 vote. Board member Wesley Hightower voted against changing from the current system.

The tribunals are the product of a two-year discipline committee study by board members, district staff and advisory council members. The process aims to create more consistency among discipline cases in the district’s five attendance areas.

A three-person panel will take over the appeals process from area advisory councils. The paid panel members would meet in each attendance area each month to hear cases. Currently advisory councils hear appeals from students, but discipline dominates much of each month’s meetings.

The district will advertise for primary and alternate tribunal members later this month.
