Scholarships for 8 Aiken County students

AIKEN -- Eight Aiken County students are the recipients of the federal Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship, which includes a $1,500 annual award.

The state Education Department announced the 360 statewide winners today.

The scholarship is renewable for up to four years and honors students with at least a 1300 on the SAT or a 29 on the ACT. Students must also have a minimum 3.5 grade point average.

The following students were recipients:
Anthony Nguyen, South Aiken High

Rebecca Phifer, North Augusta High

Caitlin Carter, North Augusta High

Frederick Grimm, North Augusta High

Harris Droghini, Aiken High

Greg Stephens, Jr., Aiken Christian School

Aric Berning, Aiken High

Jessica Kaczmarek, North Augusta High

The award is named for the late U.S. Senator Robert C. Byrd of West Virginia. More than 7,300 students received the scholarship nation-wide.
