Meeting tonight on Aiken sales tax projects

  • Follow Aiken

AIKEN - Aiken County Council's sales tax committee will meet tonight to chop down the list of possible 1-cent sales tax projects once more.

The meeting will begin at 6:45 p.m., and Council members Gary Bunker LaWana McKenzie and Kathy Rawls are set to review the latest list of proposed projects.

The sales tax committee met two weeks ago week, and determined that, once approved, the tax package would equal about $65 million. About half of those funds are slated to go toward road paving, resurfacing and extending county roads in Aiken and Aiken County.

As part of a memorandum of understanding, the county also agreed to use about $13 million of the tax funds to help cover the cost of improving thoroughfares in Aiken and North Augusta. Council members will learn whether North Augusta officials have not yet named projects that would be considered for the funding.

Council may decide to wait until 2011 to place the tax package on the ballot.

The meeting will be held in Aiken Technical College's Health Science Building, Room 1309.

Please don't pave the dirt

Please don't pave the dirt roads in horse country. We like them just the way they are.

Riverman, maintenance of the

Riverman, maintenance of the dirt roads is expensive. How about special tax districts for the cost of increased maintenance if you want them to remain dirt.

KSL, the dirt roads are

KSL, the dirt roads are usually on right-aways through private land. In my case, the right-aways are not wide enough to pave and it requires that I and the other owners give the county land. That's not fair, especially when we like the roads as they are. Where did you read dirt roads are more expensive to maintain than paved ones? Not doubting you, but I'd like to see that.

First cost to pave a road is

First cost to pave a road is high. But on-going maintenance of the huge number of dirt roads in Aiken County (keeping them scraped) was high. Two places for the information. One was the articles in the Aiken Standard years ago when Aiken County was seeking a tax increase for paving a number of the roads in eastern Aiken County. The other I would prefer to give you privately if you care to contact me.
