Augusta man pleads guilty to abusing son

An Augusta man whose use of corporal punishment left his 7-year-old son with bruises on his face and the back of his head pleaded guilty to child abuse Thursday.

Rudolph Blackwell, 29, pleaded in Richmond County Superior Court to a reduced charge of second-degree cruelty to children. On June 20, 2017, he was accused of punching the boy in the face, although he said it was a slap.

Blackwell, a high school graduate who maintains steady employment and never misses a child support payment, has taken classes in fatherhood and anger management, said defense attorney Nathan Stuckey.

Judge Daniel J. Craig sentenced Blackwell to 10 years on probation.
