Chatham County Sheriff’s Office mistakenly releases man charged with rape, assaulting child

SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s help in locating an inmate who was accidentally released from custody Tuesday morning.

Officials say Jose Maria Perez was released early Tuesday morning and that “the circumstances of his release are being investigated at this time.”

Perez was charged with rape, home invasion, aggravated assault, obstruction, burglary, probation violation, and aggravated sodomy.

He is described as 5-feet, 8 inches and weighing 165 pounds.
