Qualifying starts in special Blythe election

The first candidate for mayor of Blythe qualified on Monday.

Phillip Lee Stewart, 38, lists his occupation as a mechanic on the qualifying affidavit he filed at Blythe city hall.

The mayor’s job for the small city on the Richmond-Burke County line is open after former longtime mayor Tom Cobb, who ran unopposed in November, resigned last month for health reasons.

Qualifying for the March 20 special election runs through noon Wednesday.
