Augusta State Medical Prison inmate assaulted

An Augusta State Medical Prison inmate was attacked and cut by another inmate, according to a Department of Corrections incident report released Tuesday.

 

The violence took place on Thursday afternoon. According to the report, a guard delivering mail found Mario Whitaker, 29, with cuts to his head and neck. The other inmates in the dormitory were searched for evidence of a fight and Taurus D. Thornton, 29, was found with a cut on his hand. When searched, a handmade knife, a shank, was found on Thornton.

Both men were treated and released from the medical unit, according to the report. Both were also placed in administrative segregation and given a disciplinary report for fighting. Whitaker was also given a disciplinary report for having a cell phone, and Thornton was given an additional disciplinary report for possessing a weapon.

According to the Department of Correction’s inmate database, Thornton is scheduled to be released Oct. 17. He is serving a prison term for kidnapping, aggravated assault and two counts of armed robbery from DeKalb County.

Whitaker is serving life in prison. He was convicted of voluntary manslaughter, aggravated assault and two counts of armed robbery in DeKalb County.
