Fort Gordon opens Tax Center offering free services to service members and their families

Fort Gordon will once again offer free tax preparation services to military personnel and their families this year.

“Free preparation and filing of the state and federal income taxes with a new central location is helpful for those who may or may not come to Fort Gordon more often,” Capt. Anthony Avitable, an officer and overseer of the post’s Tax Center, said.

The service is an offer that Sgt. Jacob Adams planned to take advantage of. The Army linguist was already prepared to file his taxes at the center’s new location at the corner of Chamberlain Avenue and Rice Road on Monday. He has used the service since he arrived on post in 2013.

“It benefits me a lot,” Adams said. “It’s easy, it’s on base and you get to make an appointment which works with the job schedule.”

Each year personnel from and around the post undergo training with the IRS to receive accreditation as a tax preparer at the office. Each individual is equipped with the highest level of training that is unique to the military, Avitable said.

“We have service members who are part of all these different units at Fort Gordon and we get them trained and qualified to come here and this will be their job from January to April,” he said.

During the 2016 tax season, the center served more than 4,500 members, resulting in $5,093,604 in refunds for the Fort Gordon community.

“And that saved folks over $650,000 in filing fees,” Avitable said.

This year’s goal is to serve even more.

“Tax season stresses a lot of people out, so it’s an important function for the Fort Gordon community that this tax center serves,” Avitable said. “It’s a readiness mission and having these service members come here and get their taxes done for free by qualified and trained people who know what they’re doing, that is one less stress that they need to worry about.”

The Tax Center is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesdays and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.
