Richmond County authorities investigating inmate death

Richmond County authorities are investigating the death of an inmate at the Charles B. Webster Detention Center.

Charles M. Bishop, Jr., 57, of Martinez, was pronounced dead at the jail at 7:05 a.m., a coroner’s office news release states.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office requested GBI assistance during which staff were interviewed and it was determined that there appeared to be no foul play, Agent Pat Morgan said.

Bishop’s body has been sent to the GBI Lab for an autopsy.

Bishop was arrested Dec. 12, 2017 and charged with texting while driving, DUI, possession of methamphetamine and possession of firearm or a knife during a crime and had a $7,378 bond, according to Richmond County sheriff’s records.
