North Augusta High School Band Director Chuck Deen was named to School Band and Orchestra magazine’s “50 Directors Who Make a Difference.”
Deen was selected from nearly 900 nominations made by students, former and current colleagues, band parents, administrators, and former band directors. One director is selected from each state.
“I take pride in having many success stories of varied student levels in my career and every day I carry that history with me,” he told the magazine. “It makes me a better educator for all students, current and future.”
The Aiken High School band received a grant from Public Education Partners on behalf of class of 2000 graduate Lee Elena Mangiante.
Mangiante is a cancer researcher for Eli Lilly and Company and selected the band program for the grant in memory of the band’s late director, Joe Laorenza.
“I wanted to highlight the fact that the attributes that make a great scientist – persistence, dedication, curiosity, intellectual engagement, and teamwork – are nurtured and strengthened by participation in a music program,” she said in a prepared statement.
