SRS employee workshop set

A workshop to help former Savannah River Site employees qualify for aid under the Energy Employee Occupational Illness Program Act will be held from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Thursday in Blackville, S.C., according to a news release.

 

More than 40,000 former SRS workers may qualify for EEOICPA benefits, including financial help and no-cost health care to mitigate the toxic or radioactive exposure they sustained.

Former workers can learn more about these benefits, whether they are eligible, and spend time getting to know other former SRS workers by attending the Lunch and Learn session.

The free session will be held at The Miller’s Bread Basket, 483 Main St., in Blackville, S.C. People who want to attend can RSVP by calling 803-262-4726.

The following topics will be covered at the Lunch and Learn:

• Next steps when something is discovered in the health screening process

• How to file a successful EEOICPA claim

• What to do if an EEOICPA claim has been denied or rejected

• What benefits are available and how to access them

• How to file for or update an impairment rating

• How to get reimbursed for previous out of pocket expenses

“Former SRS workers sacrificed their health to deter — and if necessary, fight — a nuclear war,” said Josh Gibbs, Community Outreach Manager at Nuclear Care Partners, which is playing host to the event. “They deserve our help in return. That’s why we’re having this event; to let them know we’re here for them and to answer their questions.”

Since 1945, more than 600,000 men and women have served in more than 360 nuclear weapons facilities throughout the United States.

Collectively, they built more than 70,000 nuclear weapons for the country’s nuclear defense.

Many of these workers have developed debilitating, sometimes fatal, illnesses due to radiation and toxic chemical exposure, according to the release.
