Augusta man shot, killed on New Year’s Eve

An Augusta man was shot and killed New Year’s Eve and another man is in jail on murder charges.

At 6:45 p.m., Richmond County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a call of shots fired at Sierra Point Apartments, 1814 Fayetteville Dr. There they found Michael Alonzo Cooper, 22, of the 1700 block of Central Avenue, who Coroner Mark Bowen said was shot at least once. Cooper was taken to AU Medical Center where he died at 10:25 p.m., Bowen said. An autopsy will be done by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Deputies learned that Cooper had been shot by Anthony Kyle Butler, 20, of the 2800 block of Gordy Road, and that prior to the shooting Butler had pointed the gun at another person who was not injured, according to the sheriff’s office.

Butler is currently being held at the Charles B. Webster Detention Center on one count each of murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
