Gibson funeral home destroyed in early morning fire

A funeral home in Glascock County was destroyed by fire early Tuesday.

A passerby reported the fire at Taylor Funeral Home on 57 College St., in Gibson at 4:27 a.m., said Mike Lyons, Glascock County EMA/911 director . By the time fire crews arrived, the business was fully involved.

“We were only able to protect the structures around it,” Lyons said.

There was no one in the building at the time of the fire and no one was injured in the flames, Lyons said. A fireman did sustain a non-life threatening injury after a fall and was taken to a McDuffie County hospital for treatment, he said.

A cause of the fire is undetermined, Lyon said. State fire marshals are assisting with the investigation which may take up to a week.

Lyons said the damage caused by fire has been difficult for the community.

“It’s the only funeral home we have here,” he said.

Jerry Taylor, who also owns Taylor Funeral Home in Louisville, said plans are to find a temporary place for services as he looks into rebuilding.

“My heart just broke about this,” he said.
