Augusta man gets prison time for breaking girlfriend’s arm

An Augusta man plead guilty to a reduced charge Thursday for an assault on his former girlfriend that left her bruised and cut and suffering from a broken arm.

Bobby Greer, 61, pleaded in Richmond County Superior Court to aggravated battery. A charge of rape was dismissed as part of the plea agreement. Judge Daniel J. Craig sentenced Greer, who had no prior felony record, to four years in prison followed by six years on probation under the First Offender Act.

On July 19 after an argument with his girlfriend, Greer hit her with a broom and ashtray. Greer said Thursday that it was only a skinny aluminum broom handle and that he shielded his girlfriend from the blows from the ashtray by keeping his hand between it and her body.
