Langley Pond will be back in action by the end of 2019, when a Charlotte, N.C., construction company finishes rebuilding its dam, according to Aiken County Council Chairman Gary Bunker.
Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to award a $13.5 million contract to Crowder Construction Co., Bunker said.
A leak in the nearly 150-year-old dam was discovered in November 2014 and enough water was released from the lake to ease the danger of a break.
That left water levels so low, the pond was “essentially drained,” Bunker said.
Before that, the pond played host to the Augusta Invitational Regatta, the Southeastern Regional Championship Regatta and the swimming portion of an international triathlon.
The regatta alone had an estimated economic impact of $2.4 million.
A little less than half the money for repairs will come from federal grants.
