Two dead in Waynesboro house fire

A husband and wife were killed in a Thursday morning house fire in Waynesboro.

John Douglass Cates II and Sherri Cochran Cates died in the fire at their residence in the 300 block of Dogwood Drive, a Burke County Sheriff’s Office dispatcher confirmed.

A neighbor reported the fire about 12:30 a.m., said Waynesboro Fire Department Deputy Chief Robert Parrish. Crews who arrived to the scene were met by smoke and heavy flames. They continued to fight the fire until 6 a.m.

The two victims were taken to Burke Medical Center where they were pronounced dead.

The department and the state Fire Marshal, are investigating the fire.
