3 plead to reduced charges in 2015 homicide

Three Augusta men accused of murder in a homicide case pleaded guilty Thursday to lesser charges.

Brandon L. Jackson, 24, Marcellus Nipple, 26, and Antonio B. Rivers, 28, were initially charged with murder in the Aug. 5, 2015, shooting of 34-year-old Carlton D. Nipple.

Marcellus and Carlton Nipple were brothers. Rivers was the victim’s cousin. On the day of the shooting, Marcellus Nipple, Rivers and Jackson accompanied the victim when he went to Barnes Road to confront Sidney Carter III. The victim and Carter, both of whom had a child with the same woman, were engaged in heated exchanges, said Assistant District Attorney Thomas Watkins.

Carlton Nipple got out of his vehicle with a gun in hand. Richmond County sheriff’s investigators determined Carter shot Carlton Nipple in self-defense.

After Carlton was shot, Marcellus picked up his brother’s gun, chased after Carter and shot at him, Watkins said. After taking the victim to the hospital, the defendants decided to hide Carlton Nipple’s gun, Watkins said.

Jackson pleaded guilty Thursday to false statements, tampering with evidence and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Nipple pleaded guilty to tampering with evidence, terroristic threats, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Judge Daniel J. Craig sentenced them to four years in prison, followed by six years on probation.

Jackson and Nipple will get credit for the 28 months they have already served behind bars.

Rivers pleaded guilty to tampering with evidence and false statements. Craig sentenced him to 10 years on probation under the First Offender Act.
