Sunday search doesn’t find second victim in boat collision

Sunday’s search efforts did not locate the body of Tom Allgood Jr., one of two men killed in the collision of two bass boats Friday near Wildwood boat ramp.

“DNR Game Wardens searched throughout the day with sonar and with a helicopter but we did not locate Mr. Allgood,” Mark McKinnon, a Department of Natural Resources public affairs officer, said in an email response to questions. “We will resume the search after sunrise tomorrow (Monday).”

The body of the other victim, George Ashmore, 51, of Thomson, was found Saturday, according to a DNR news release.

“The preliminary investigation and witness statements revealed that the two bass boats collided, ejecting both drivers. Neither driver resurfaced,” according to the news release. “Search efforts (Friday) afternoon, using DNR boats equipped with sonar and the Columbia County dive team, failed to locate the victims.”

GA DNR Law Enforcement’s Critical Incident Reconstruction Team (CIRT) recovered both boats.

Allgood, 65, is the son of the late Tom Allgood Sr., a former state senator who died in a plane crash at Daniel Field in 2000 with his wife, Thelma.
