A well-known Augusta attorney was identified as one of two people killed in a boating accident Friday.
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources issued a news release Saturday identifying George Ashmore, 51, of Thomson and Tom Allgood Jr., 65, of Augusta as victims in the crash near Wildwood boat ramp.
Ashmore’s body was recovered by authorities Saturday, according to DNR, however the search for Allgood’s remains are ongoing.
“The preliminary investigation and witness statements revealed that the two bass boats collided, ejecting both drivers. Neither driver resurfaced,” the news release stated.
“Search efforts (Friday) afternoon, using DNR boats equipped with sonar and the Columbia County dive team, failed to locate the victims.
The search was suspended at dark and resumed early this morning. Columbia County Sheriff’s Deputies secured the scene throughout the night.”
GA DNR Law Enforcement’s Critical Incident Reconstruction Team (CIRT) is investigating the incident and has recovered both boats from the collision.
DNR confirmed the two men are the only victims involved in the crash at this time, and will continue to search for Allgood’s remains.
Allgood is the son of the late Tom Allgood Sr., a former state senator who died in a plane crash at Daniel Field in 2000 with his wife, Thelma.
