A sailor stationed at Fort Gordon who has been charged with vehicular homicide in the death of a friend and fellow sailor was granted a $12,000 bond Wednesday.
Adrion Richard, 23 , was arrested Thursday in connection with the Thanksgiving Day crash at North Leg and Sibley roads in Augusta that led to the death of 22-year-old Jason Oliver Alexander.
Richard, who has no prior criminal record, made his first court appearance Wednesday in Richmond County Magistrate Court. Chief Judge William D. Jennings III granted Richard bond with the conditions he cannot drive or drink alcohol, and he is to stay in Richmond County. His attorney, Keith Johnson, said he expects the Navy to restrict Richard to the base.
Richard is charged with driving under the influence, speeding, failure to maintain lane and vehicular homicide.
According to a police report, Richard was attempting a left turn onto Sibley Road when his 2004 Cadillac CTS struck a utility pole on the east shoulder of the road. Sheriff’s deputies reported that Richard had a strong odor of alcohol and slurred speech when they arrived at the scene.
Alexander was sitting in the rear right of the vehicle and was partially ejected, the police report states. He was taken to AU Medical Center where he later died from blunt force head and torso injuries, according to the Richmond County Coroner’s Office.
