Augusta man killed in traffic accident

An Augusta man died Monday from injuries he received in a car crash, according to the Richmond County coroner.

Robert Wahlmeier, 56, of Stevens Creek Court, was driving his Ford Escort south in the 4600 block of Mike Padgett Highway when he stopped for a school bus that was unloading in the northbound lane shortly before 4 p.m, according to a news release.

Wahlmeier’s vehicle was rear-ended by another vehicle and he was transported to AU Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 5:11 p.m., according to Coroner Mark Bowen.

An autopsy will be done Tuesday at the GBI Crime Lab. The coroner’s office and the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the death.
