Motorist killed in fatal collision with tractor trailer on Gordon Highway

A motorist is dead after a fatal collision in Augusta early Wednesday morning.

Willie Williams Jr., 24, of Waynesboro, was killed after his vehicle crashed into a tractor-trailer at the intersection of Gordon Highway and Highland Avenue, according to a news release from Richmond Coroner Coroner Mark Bowen.

The wreck occurred at 2:19 a.m. when Williams, who was traveling west along Gordon Highway in a white Dodge Charger, struck the rear of a tractor-trailer, which was stopped for a red light at Highland Avenue.

Williams was pronounced dead at the scene at 3 a.m., according to the news release. He died from injuries he received in the crash and had to be extricated from the vehicle by fire crews, Bowen said.

Speed and alcohol appear to be a contributing factor, the news release states.

No autopsy will be performed. A toxicology test will be done, Bowen said.
