Hephzibah man charged in death of motorcycle driver

Freddie Walker Jr. (CCSO)

A Hephzibah man has been charged in connection with a fatal crash Nov. 10.

Freddie Walker Jr., 45, is facing charges of vehicular homicide in the second degree and failure to yield while turning left in the death of Ira E. Walker, no relation, 39, on South Belair Road in Columbia County.

According to an incident report, Ira E. Walker was traveling south on the inside through lane when he lost control of his 2001 Suzuki motorcycle after Freddie Walker failed to yield while trying to turn left into Bi-Lo.

Walker was later pronounced dead at Doctors Hospital.

Traffic cameras at the intersection showed Ira Walker improperly passing several vehicles before the crash, the incident report stated, adding that the motorcycle was traveling faster than surrounding vehicles. Two witnesses of the crash reported he drove at high rates of speed and in a reckless manner.

A warrant was issued for Freddie Walker’s arrest Nov. 10, and he was booked into the Columbia County Detention Center on Friday after surrendering to authorities. He was released on $2,200 bond the same day.
