The James Brown Family Foundation will continue its annual tradition of giving Thanksgiving turkeys to needy families on Monday.
Community members from across the Augusta area have been registering to receive the turkeys through the James Brown Turkey Giveaway over the last month. The giveaway, which began in 1991 with the Godfather of Soul’s desire to give back to those in need, is at Dyess Park beginning 8 a.m.
“He knew how it was to wake up on Thanksgiving and not have a meal or wake up on Christmas and not have (gifts),” charity coordinator Elif Crawford said.
About 600 turkeys will be given away.
Beginning Nov. 25, the foundation will begin taking registrations for the Annual Christmas Toy Giveaway at the James Brown Arena from 9 to 11 a.m, another tradition the Godfather of Soul began more than 25 years ago. Registrations will continue on Dec. 2 and 9.
Those interested should bring a parent or guardian’s photo I.D. and birth certificate for each child registering, according to the foundation’s website. Children through age 12 may register but due to the limited number of toys, families must pick up the gifts at the toy giveaway on Dec. 22 at the arena.
Turkeys and toys are purchased from funds the foundation receives through corporate sponsors and other donations. There will also be toy drives at area Walmarts on the same day as the toy registrations. Shoppers may bring new, unwrapped gifts to be a part of the giveaway.
