Authorities have opened up the shoulder on Interstate 20 at mile marker 179 for traffic after an accident with injuries involving three tractor-trailers shut down all lanes, according to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.
Police said the driver of a tractor-trailer was unable to stop his vehicle after cresting a hill and rear-ended two other tractor-trailers that were stopped due to a separate accident.
According to the sheriff’s office, the driver of the first tractor-trailer had to be extricated from his vehicle and airlifted to Augusta University.
Police have opened a detour at exit 183, however they said traffic has been moving along the shoulder around the crash.
Two other people involved in the crash were taken to local hospitals for unknown injuries.
