A local organization in Augusta is set to host its first Veterans Day event for those who have served in the armed forces and their families this weekend.
The “Day of Service for Our Heroes” event, hosted by the Women Veterans Organization of the CSRA, will be from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Springfield Park on Reynolds Street.
Janice Jamison, director of marketing and development for the organization, said the event is a way to give back to all who have served and their loved ones.
“We want to be an organization that takes care of their own on Veterans Day,” she said.
There will be food and live entertainment from local artists and school bands in the area, Jamison said.
“The Richmond County high schools are going to be performing and having a battle of the bands which will be a big section of our entertainment and a crowd favorite,” she said.
Vendors will also be on site to offer a variety of screenings and exams to those in need, she added.
“We’ll have about 10 vendors there that are going to be providing either awareness or free services,” Jamison said. These services will include free flu shots, free dental screenings and free health screenings.
The organization, which serves female veterans in need, will also be presenting its first She Serves Award to an active community member, Jamison said.
“This award is going to go to a female veteran that is active and has done exceptionally well in the community,” she said.
