Friends and family are mourning the loss of Mary Ann Trudeau, the wife of longtime former mayor and current Grovetown council member Dennis Trudeau, after she died early Monday morning.
”It is with a heavy heart that the City of Grovetown reports the passing of Mary Ann Trudeau, wife of former long-time mayor and current Councilman Dennis Trudeau,” said a news release from the city. “Mary Ann was a fixture in Grovetown for many years, herself serving in Grovetown government, and was involved in a number of community support organizations. She will be missed by the elected officials, staff, and residents of Grovetown and the surrounding area. We offer our heartfelt condolences to Councilman Trudeau and his family in this difficult time.”
Mary Ann Trudeau served as a Grovetown council member from 1969-1972 and again from 1977-1984. She also served as acting mayor from January to March 1982.
Grovetown city councilwoman Vickie Cook worked with Trudeau at Mary Ann’s Beauty Shop, which she operated for more than 50 years. She said she learned of Trudeau’s death early Monday morning.
“My heart is just broken,” Cook said, adding that Trudeau was her “go-to person.”
“I just feel bad for the people that didn’t know her because she’d just been good to everybody,” Cook said.
Trudeau reportedly died from injuries sustained after a car accident she and her husband were involved in Sept. 16.
Grovetown Councilwoman Sylvia Martin recalled knowing Trudeau as a child.
“I have known Mary Ann since I was a young girl,” Martin said. “I remember fondly going to her beauty shop with my grandmother. She is an icon in this city. Growing up, everybody knew her.”
