Augusta mother again charged with child abuse

An Augusta woman accused of cruelty to children while still on probation for abusing a child in 2014 will be arraigned on the new charge later this month.

Roberta Brewer, 32, was named in the one-count indictment returned Tuesday by the Richmond County grand jury. She has been held without bond on the new charge since her Sept. 19 arrest.

According to the indictment, Brewer is accused of beating her child with a belt and cord between Sept. 18-19. The alleged beating, according to the indictment, left bruises on the child’s back, torso and arms.

Brewer was arrested in 2014 for beating another child with an extension cord. Judge Sheryl B. Jolly sentenced her to one year in prison followed by four years on probation. A probation violation warrant has been filed in that case.
