Bond denied in basketball game homicide

Burton

Bond was denied Friday to an Augusta man accused of gunning down another man on a neighborhood park.

At the conclusion of a hearing in Richmond County Superior Court, Judge Ashley Wright denied bond for Tyedon D. Burton, 25, finding he could pose a danger to the community.

Burton is accused of fatally shooting 22-year-old Malcolm Quarter the afternoon of Sept. 17 at the Big Oak Park at Wheeler and Boy Scout roads.

Assistant District Attorney Ashley Muller said Friday that Quarter was playing basketball with friends. After the game ended, Quarter and Burton got into an argument that turned physical, and Burton pulled a gun and shot Quarter three times, Muller said.

But defense attorney Ashanti Lilley countered that Burton was jumped by Quarter and others. He took the gun away from Quarter and was trying to run away, Lilley said. He fired in self-defense, she said.

“It’s hard to imagine how a game of basketball could turn out so wrong,” Wright said.
