Burke County arrests five in metal theft at landfill

Five men were arrested in Burke County for their involvement in stealing metal transported to the Burke County landfill for recycling.

 

In a release, Burke County Sheriff’s chief deputy Lewis Blanchard said the department’s criminal investigations division partnered with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office CSRA Metal Theft Task Force investigator on the arrests.

Four employees of the Burke County Solid Waste Landfill and a private contractor for Waste Management were arrested Thursday afternoon for felony theft by taking and have been booked at the Burke County Detention Center.

—Marvin Jones, 60, Burke County employee

—Richard Stidons, 46, Burke County employee

—Ralph Hankerson, 61, Burke County employee

—Anthony McNeil, 43, Burke County employee

The stolen materials were recyclables of Plant Vogtle and other industries. The estimated value of the metal and copper wire stolen by the group this year is in excess of $35,000, the release states.
