The Richmond County grand jury returned an indictment Tuesday that accuses an Augusta man of rape, kidnapping and burglary.

According to the indictment, Kelvin Hatcher, 39, broke into a home July 3. Hatcher, of the 1400 block of Walton Way, is accused of raping an 11-year-old girl in the home.

At the time of the assault, Hatcher was on probation for possession of cocaine in one case and entering an automobile with intent to commit a crime in another case. A probation violation warrant was filed after Hatcher’s arrest in July.

Hatcher has those two convictions and two earlier felony convictions - possession of cocaine in 2011 and possession of cocaine in 1998.

Hatcher, who is in jail without bond, should be arraigned next month. His case is assigned to Judge Sheryl B. Jolly, the judge who sentenced him to probation in April for possession of cocaine.
