Augusta man acquitted of aggravated assault charges

A 21-year-old Augusta man was acquitted Wednesday of charges that included aggravated assault.

The Richmond County Superior Court jury found Eddie Jackson Jr. not guilty at the conclusion of a three-day trial during which Jackson testified he was in Swainsboro when Jerome Sims was shot in a Sept. 1, 2016, robbery attempt.

While defense attorney Kevin Davis stressed to the jury in his closing argument the inconsistencies in Jackson’s account of what happened and the lack of physical evidence, Assistant District Attorney Simon Williams reminded the jury that Sims was always consistent on identifying the shooter as a man named Eddie who he knew from high school.

The night of the shooting, Sims told the investigating officer the shooter was Eddie Murphy.
